Plastic Free Initiative!

What is plastic?

Plastic, polymeric material that has the capability of being molded or shaped, usually by the application of heat and pressure. It's derived from natural, organic materials such as cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt and crude oil.

There are two types of plastic:

-Thermoplastics-which softens on heating and then hardens again on cooling.

-Thermosets-which never softens once they have been molded.

How plastic effects us human?
Toxic chemicals leach out of plastic and are found in the blood and tissues of nearly all of us. Exposure to them are linked to cancers , birth defects , impaired immunity , endocrine disruption and some other ailments.

Why plastic is harmful to the environment?
Plastic is a man made product that does not occur naturally on its own.
While plastic has many benefits, it's usually not biodegradable (able to naturally decompose) and so if it is thrown away instead of recycled, it can create a lot of waste.
Plastic has toxic pollutants that damage the environment and cause land, water and air pollution. It takes hundred or even thousands of years for plastic to break down, so the damage to the environment is long-lasting.

.
Why plastic should be banned?
Plastic bags pollute not only water, but our land and air as well. Plastic is harmful to our health, wildlife and marine life. And they are made from non-renewable sources, a lot of energy is used to produce plastic.
Plastic does not degrade. Approximately 46,000 - 1,000,000 plastic fragments floating within every square mile of the globes oceans. It's expensive and hard to clean as plastics are not easy to recycle or remove plastic from the environment.

What can be plastic substitutes?

What to do if you are using plastic?
Some measure if you are using plastic or trying to cut it down. Recycle plastics according to the instructions provided by your recycling service provider, depending on size, shape or type.
Leave your plastics in a recycling bin. Do not throw plastic with other garbage bins.
Take your plastics to a local recycling center or factory if there is no pick up option.
Put recycling baskets in every room/office/malls/outside houses.

Calm and Balm is one of the few, trying to dent the environment by enacting a plastic free initiative in Pakistan. We wanted something that not only has an effect on the environment, but something that also does wonders for our customers. Such as shampoo bars. Our shampoo bars are not only environment friendly but also give beneficial result. Each bar has its own purpose and uniqueness wrapped in butter paper and metal tin. We use recycled craft paper for our other product packaging.
.
We ourselves are trying to reduce plastic as much as possible. And hopefully, in future we might be able to make a change either minor or major.
